An auxiliary policewoman in Guizhou province has been called a hero after she managed to hold off a machete-wielding robber in a five-minute long struggle, sustaining five wounds in the process.
Cao Yu, 22, was unarmed when she approached the man at Tashan Square in Anshun city on April 3. He was carrying a rusty, 60-centimeter-long machete, which he’d reportedly just used during a robbery nearby.
When Cao attempted to question the suspect, he took the machete to her neck, stabbing her left shoulder in the process. Wounded, Cao managed to grab the suspect and struggled to hold him as she suffered more injuries to her hands.
”I was trying to take over the machete and delay time until another officer came to help me,” Cao said. “There were a lot of tourists walking around the square, and I needed to make sure that they were safe.”
Within five minutes, Cao’s colleagues arrived to help control the man.
“Cao Yu was bleeding all over her body, but she was still keeping a firm grip on the suspect,” one police officer said in a Xinhua report.
