A middle-aged Hong Kong woman has been busted attempting to smuggle wads of cash strapped to her body into the mainland, according to reports on Weibo.
Authorities became suspicious when the woman’s immigration record showed she had crossed the border 90 times in 15 days. The woman was apprehended yesterday morning at the Futian port as she attempted to blend in with the thousands of other businesspeople. Wearing only a backpack, the woman became flustered when police seized her, claiming that she didn’t take anything.
Subsequent search of her body yielded a hefty amount of Hong Kong currency taped to her chest, thighs and feet. It is suspected the woman was a mule for “underground banks” which seek to evade detection by customs and circumvent the quota of domestic capital outflow.
While this is a serious amount of cash someone will be missing, this is certainly not the weirdest haul customs officials have intercepted in China. In fact, we’ve seen it all: turtles, underwear laden with diamonds, and of course, anal cavities stuffed with gold. Perhaps the mastermind behind this botched operation might want to look into making a new smuggling tunnel into the mainland.
