Plumes of smoke could be seen rising from the side of an expressway near Quizhou city, Guangxi province, where an armor truck carrying cash caught fire around 11:00 a.m. on April 15. All 11 boxes of cash inside the carrier were burned to a crisp, and the flames spread to forestry on the side of the road.
The drivers said they had tried to put out the blaze using the vehicle’s fire extinguisher, but alas, it was expired.
Firefighters rushed to the scene and managed to extinguish the flames, but by this time it was already too late for the 11 boxes of money inside. Stacks of bills, with their edges curled and blackened, were strewn about on the side of the road. It’s unclear how much cash the truck was carrying at the time, but police are now investigating the cause of the fire (perhaps to make sure it was not another elaborate scheme to rob an armored truck).
Yesterday, a goods van belonging to the electric business company JD.com also burst into flames near the entrance of Zhonghuan in Shanghai. Blasts could be heard from people nearby but the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
No casualties were reported in either case.
