With her 92-year-old husband’s father’s birthday coming up, a very thoughtful and internet savvy Guizhou villager went online and booked a banquet of Italian food, to be prepared in their village by foreign chefs, to mark the occasion for a price tag of just 5,000 yuan.
Sina News reports that while at the local Taobao outlet in Yunshe Village, a village located deep in the mountains of Guizhou Province and home to members of the Tujia ethnic group, Zeng Jinchai spotted an advertisement on the storefront for direct-delivery Italian goods. For her husband’s father’s 92nd birthday, Zeng went all out and ordered 10 Italian set meals online from the supplier for 500 yuan a piece.
The lavish set meal boasted steak, lobster and pizza along with appetizers, sweets and wine. He was soon notified that for the special order, the outlet was even going to send three chefs to prepare their feast right in the freaking village for no extra charge.
According to Sina, promoting the opening of village Taobao outlets across China is a strategy developed last year by the Alibaba Group directed at turning China’s “Taobao Villages” into buyers as well as sellers.
Still, something is definitely off with this story and we somehow don’t see western food banquets becoming a fad in the countryside. But, you can kill yourself trying to figure out what the marketing strategy might be and what exactly the end game may be; or you can just look at some totally adorable pictures of a 92-year-old villager from rural Guizhou inspecting lobsters and eating spaghetti.
As he watched the pizzas being made, the old man reportedly remarked with surprise, “Wow, they put the stuffing on the outside of the pies!”
What do you have planned for your father-in-law’s birthday?
