Using toilets in China can be a somewhat unpleasant experience from time to time. For one male passenger at the Xinqiao Airport in Anhui province, however, it literally became a pain in the ass.
According to Anhui Business News, the passenger’s friend had been called to the bathroom as they were waiting to board a flight from Hefei to Qunming, Yunnan on April 16. When he arrived, he witnessed a partly broken toilet lying on the ground and his travel companion, who was bleeding badly from his rear.
According to Xingqiao Airport, the toilet was broken due to “possible inappropriate posture or excessive body weight”.
Staff speculated the man had been “squatting” on the toilet, which the passenger vehemently denied, instead accusing the toilet of being shoddily made.
“He might have been worried about our request for compensation,” said airport authorities, who allegedly spared the passenger the financial responsibility for the “more-than-1000-yuan” (approximately 163 USD) toilet .
“A toilet bowl is meant to sit on, not stand on,” officials at the airport were quoted as saying.
A snapshot of the scene with the caption “please go to a restroom with proper manners” was uploaded to Weibo shortly after the accident by a netizen claiming to be a security guard at the airport, however, it was later deleted.
The passenger, who did not try to press charges against the airport, has been confirmed to have departed Anhui by plane after receiving medical treatment at the airport clinic.
Maybe this will serve a cautionary tale of sorts.
