Amidst disheartening statistics on divorce and domestic violence, one would be forgiven for despairing over true love and doubting the sanctity of marriage in China. However, this heart-warming story of a devoted Guangxi couple has rekindled our faith in this sacred-bond, and would convince the greatest cynic that virtue and true love still exists.
When this couple said their wedding vows 55 years ago, pledging to never abandon each other, it is clear that they truly meant them. Despite the hardship they have endured since, their commitment has never wavered, nor has their love been blunted by adversity.
In 1985, Huang Funeng suffered a serious eye disease which gradually made him totally blind. Since then, his loving wife has guided his every move, leading him through life with a bamboo rod, in spite of her own physical affliction, osteoporosis, which causes her hunched posture.
The couple never had children, but managed to still find joy in each other’s company for 55 years as they lived a simple existence farming chickens and ducks.
The par’s touching story has inspired renewed belief in the power of love, while we were already persuaded of the resilience of many Chinese who overcome disability to do good in the world. Recently, two men (one blind and one armless) gained fame for their conservation efforts, while a disabled Ningxia woman cooks and cleans for her family despite only being able to use her feet.
