A woman was detained by police in Foshan city, Guangdong province after she hit and critically injured a toddler while driving without a license and then had the cojones to try and pay the child’s family off so that she wouldn’t get in trouble.
The unnamed 45-year-old suspect was driving an SUV through the Fuxi Wholesale Fruit Market when she hit the two-year-old girl at around 3:00 p.m. on April 20. She rolled over the child’s body three times before finally stopping the vehicle, according to the toddler’s grandmother, who’d witnessed the whole horrific event.
The family told Southern Metropolis Daily reporters that the woman stepped out of her car and immediately begged, “Don’t tell others I drove the car, tell them it was my husband who drove it” before offering to pay money as compensation.
The woman and the young child’s family both operate businesses inside the market, according to a Shanghai Daily report. The driver’s husband typically taught her how to drive using the car, but she was alone in the vehicle at the time of the accident.
The toddler was squatting on the ground playing in front of her family’s store when the woman hit her. The car first rolled over the girl’s head then again drove over her abdomen and legs. She suffered severe brain injuries and had been in a coma. Doctors fear she may not survive.
