The government of Nanyong County in Guizhou confirmed yesterday that an under-aged girl had died from “excessive drinking” during a night out with some county officials at a local bathhouse.
According to The Paper, the girl, surnamed Xiao, was 16 years old. She died on April 19. The five officials were all male employees working in the county planning department. Very few other details have been released about the case, but suffice to say, it’s sketchy as hell.
The Paper adds that while they were researching the incident, government officials changed their story multiple times and even went so far as to delete sections from the county government’s website. So, that’s not suspicious or anything.
Of course, Chinese officials are infamous for their banquets that only end when somebody dies from excessive alcohol consumption (heck, some even manage to drink themselves to death on their first day on the job or in a primary school cafeteria during lunch) and for their crazy nights out on the town full of groping and blackmail.
But, it becomes really tragic when Chinese officials’ favorite pastime collides with China’s problem with underage prostitution, and they end up getting a girl killed because of their own stupidity. More “study trips” to the torture museum might be in order.
