The simple gesture of a 27-year-old bank security guard in Hainan who held up an umbrella for an elderly wheelchair-bound woman has become a source of inspiration after a picture of the deed went viral online.
A netizen with the username 小东585 captured the image after the security guard, later identified as Xie Fei, walked over to the elderly woman with an umbrella to offer shade as she waited outside in the heat.
It turns out that the woman had been brought to the bank by her husband, who’d left her outside in the hot weather to withdraw some money, according to Tencent News.
The guard unknowingly won the hearts of hundreds of web users with his act of kindness.
“So sweet… he stood bolt upright!” web user oceanVP wrote.
A netizen identified as 西北雄鹰 echoed a similar sentiment, writing: “So gentle… I adore you!”
“This is real service, thumbs up for his inner quality!” web user 美上云端 said.
Xie admits that he can’t remember the details of this specific encounter, as he believes that offering help to senior citizens is part of his duty.
It’s not uncommon for even the smallest act of kindheartedness to gain praise on Chinese social media, after streams of negative stories have led to a perceived lack of good samaritans in the country.
