It’s not all beauty pageants and qipao modeling for Chinese airline stewardesses. Soon-to-be flight attendants at this vocational school in Chengdu, Sichuan province must undergo rigorous training, learning hand-to-hand combat as well as methods to subdue out-of-control passengers.
Chengdu East Star Airlines Travel College is one of the schools in China to train selected air safety officers who, aside from serving drinks and collecting barf bags with grace and poise, must be well-versed in combat, survival and military skills.
During training, the so-called “Iron Women” crawl through muddy trenches, learn to subdue unruly passengers and even break plates with their bare hands.
Not one person is going to attempt to steal cutlery from this lady’s goddamn plane.
“Once an emergency arises during the flight, the safety officers have to respond and solve the problem immediately. Therefore, training on reaction speed and anti-terrorism capacity is essential,” Gu Yingzhi, the dean of the college, said in a China Daily report.
Hong Kong Airlines previously trained its flight attendants in martial arts to deal with emergency situations.
