A dozen volunteers from Luoyang Animal Protection Association were confronted by appalling scenes after discovering an illegal dog slaughterhouse located in Luoyang city, Henan province.
According to Sina News, the volunteers were alerted to the presence of the slaughterhouse, which was hidden inside a 20-square-meter residential building, after a tip-off from local residents.
The volunteers who arrived were met with an appalling scene. Over 20 dogs of a variety of different breeds had just been slaughtered, including German Shepherd, Pomeranian and Silver Fox dogs. Some of these dogs were still fastened to dog collars, chains and leashes. A number of dog bells were found, indicating that a number of the dogs were not stray.
The den was divided into two areas. One is used as a slaughter house, the other is used as a workshop for processing and preserving dog meat.
According to China Daily, seven live dogs were found at the house and were sent to the local animal protection association. A female butcher was interrogated but she failed to provide any business licenses and animal vaccination certificates.
Police are currently conducting an investigation to determine how the butcher obtained the dogs and to whom she had sold the meat.
