A portion of an expressway built just half a year ago in Zhengzhou, Henan province collapsed on May 2, triggered only by a bout of heavy rain the night before.
The cave-in occurred just as a car was passing at around 6:00 a.m., creating a massive crater 16 meters long, three meters wide and at least 1.5 meters deep.
The road has only been used since November, 2014 and its construction had been completed not long before, according to Sina News. Builders said the collapse might’ve been caused by the illegal construction of sewage pipes underneath. The expressway has since been closed off and the case is under investigation.
The case is the latest in a long list of seemingly shoddily constructed roads in China’s “swiss cheese landscape“. Also, people are probably going to want to stop driving in Zhengzhou.
