A Shanghai man has been arrested for murder and robbery after he confessed to beating his gambling opponent to death with a brick and then stealing back the money he’d lost in a game of mahjong.
The suspect, an unemployed man surnamed Shen, lost nearly 2,000 yuan on September 11 last year as he was gambling on mahjong. He decided to follow the player who’d won his money, a man surnamed Wu, and ask for a ride home on his scooter, Shanghai Daily reports, citing prosecutors in Songjiang district.
On the way, Shen began attacking Wu and hit him repeatedly on the head. Shen snatched 2,000 yuan and a gold chain from Wu’s unconscious body before dumping the man in the river along with his cell phone and moped.
Police found Wu’s body in the water and Shen became a suspect after they’d studied surveillance footage. He’d tried to deny involvement until police found his bloodstained clothing and the bloody brick he’d used to kill his opponent.
This isn’t the first time a game of mahjong, a favored activity among elderly people at parks, has turned violent. In March, a Shanghai woman reportedly stabbed a man to death because he’d gotten her husband addicted to the game.
