A red carpet never fails to add a little entertainment to an event. It ignites a fashion battle and celebrities try everything to look fantastic in front of the flashbulbs, but sometimes it can all end in tragedy, and then that tragedy goes viral and turns into comedy.
Such was the case at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute’s benefit gala for its new exhibit themed, “China: Through the Looking Glass.” The fashion creations were aimed at being an exploration of Chinese influences on Western fashion. Rihanna showed up wearing a very fancy imperial yellow dress with a very large train that took Chinese couture designer Guo Pei two years to make by hand, according to Vanity Fair. The bold gown stunned some critics, but didn’t exactly shine like a diamond for Chinese netizens.
Feeling inspired by Guo’s creation, netizens circulated dozens of memes across the Chinese internet comparing Rihanna’s dress with various culinary delights. Our favorite is Rihanna modeling China’s delicious eggy crepe, the jianbing.
But Rihanna wasn’t the only target of netizens’ ridicule. Sarah Jessica Parker showed up sporting a flame-like headdress by Philip Treacy, hat designer to British royals, that many pointed out bears a striking resemblance to the 2008 Beijing Olympic torch mascot Huanhuan.
Meanwhile, Chinese celebrities like Fan Bingbing, Gao Yuanyuan and Gong Li looked absolutely gorgeous attending the gala. Good thing they didn’t dress up like other Chinese delicacies. Phew!
