Emergency rescue personnel were called to a Chengdu compound yesterday when a man with a history of mental illness stripped off his clothes and perilously swung from a tree some metres above the ground.
The man had jumped the compound wall before dispensing with his garb and scaling the tall tree, reports NetEase.
After alarmed onlookers reported his behaviour to authorities, over 100 police, fire-fighters and rescue personnel arrived to save the man.
In his erratic state, the man resisted their efforts for four hours, before he was finally subdued and brought to safety.
The man was later taken by ambulance to the hospital to receive treatment, albeit under restraint and anaesthetic.
Doctors believe a sudden “psychotic episode” was the impetus for this capricious display. Care for those afflicted by mental illness in China has been found wanting in the past, and this incident may indicate the need for further reform. Indeed, where the typical treatment of mental illness consists of involuntary confinement to an asylum, the issue seems far from resolved. This is not the first time a person believed to be experiencing mental illness has been spotted sans clothes either. Just last year, a Guangxi lady was photographed running down the streets naked.
