A 65-year-old English tutor has been sentenced to three months in jail by a Hong Kong court after being convicted of indecent assault of a minor.
The retired teacher faces a stint in a cell to reconsider his educational methods after deciding to use a hands-on approach when teaching his 16-year-old student the word “breast”. This followed a previous incident where teaching the word “hips” was used as an excuse to fondle her buttocks.
Despite the girl telling her parents of the abuse, her mother apparently brushed off her concern on the basis that it was difficult to find other good English teachers. It was not until the victim began receiving psychiatric treatment that the mother pursued the matter with police.
The judge was scathing in her verdict, accusing the man of taking advantage of her trust and exploiting the young woman.
Fears over the potential for sexual abuse by English teachers are not totally misplaced given the relative ease in which foreigners can find employment without being subject to rigorous background checks. Last year, two men (one British and American) who had previously taught in China were extradited and subsequently convicted for the respective crimes of rape and child molestation.
Last month, a Chongqing teacher was sacked after damaging footage of him kissing a student emerged online.
