The Associated Press (AP) has withdrawn its report that quoted Kuomintang (KMT) Chairman Eric Chu voicing his support for Taiwan’s eventual reunion with the mainland during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
On Monday, AP’s correspondent wrote “The head of Taiwan’s Nationalists reaffirmed the party’s support for eventual unification with the mainland when he met Monday with Chinese President Xi Jinping as part of continuing rapprochement between the former bitter enemies”.
Following the report, the KMT filed a complaint, describing the report on Chu’s comments as “non-factual and fabricated”. Lin Yi-hua, head of the KMT’s Culture and Communications Committee said “Chu did not broach the topic of unification with China during his recent visit to China.”
As a result, AP has rescinded the initial report.
Chu met with Xi Jinping in Beijing to affirm Taiwan’s desire to join the Chinese-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, which has sparked several protests.
