An array of tea traders along with 136 camels arrived in Zhangye city, Gansu province, on Tuesday, enticing tens of thousands of local residents to go out and gawk at a spectacle unseen for quite some time.
The camel caravan, loaded with tea bricks, departed from Shaanxi province last September in its journey to trace the ancient Silk Road.
The caravan will spend over a year passing through Gansu, Ningxia, Qinghai, Xinjiang until finally reaching Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city, a route that will cover 15,000 kilometers.
According to Tencent News, the caravan is expected to arrive in Kazakhstan later this year. After that, it will travel back along the same route in March of 2016, promoting the civilization of the Silk Road and selling specialty products along the way.
