A 12-year-old girl from Sichuan left behind by her parents died after feeding pesticide to herself and her grandmother in a bid to commit suicide this past May Day holiday.
According to China Youth, Lulu (an alias) asked her grandmother, Liang Anzhen, to help her buy pesticide on May 3. Thinking nothing of the request, she complied. The next day after Liang returned from work, Lulu prepared a bowl of water for her. While she didn’t drink much of it owing to the strange flavour, Liang soon felt uncomfortable and passed out.
While Liang was being sent to the hospital for treatment, a relative headed back home to take care of Lulu, but upon arriving found that she had fallen into a coma. On May 6 Liang had recovered from her poisoning, but Lulu had passed away.
Lulu’s father, surnamed Wang, flew back from Beijing on May 5 after hearing the news. “She’s an introverted girl. Her mother and I both work in Beijing. We only return home once a year during the spring festival,” said Wang. “Sometimes, we don’t even have time to come back.”
The local police are investigating the case and attempting to find a motive for Lulu’s actions.
