Amid the horrific stories of abusive teachers and kindergarteners being forced to kneel while eating lunch, one could be forgiven for mistaking this Shandong primary school event as more forced labour and abuse of power by despotic teachers. Fortunately, the occasion was actually a mass pampering activity to celebrate Mother’s Day.
Photos published by Netease show the students spoiling their mothers with hair washing and nail clipping in a modern day display of filial piety—we wonder what Confucius would have made of all this.
This event mimicked a 2011 double-ninth festival event, where hundreds of students honoured their parents in a giant foot-scrubbing ceremony in Shanghai. At a time when spoiled and ungrateful kids are becoming the ire of some parents, perhaps these activities are hoped to drill in a degree of deference and respect—and make sure no one else will starve their mother to death again.
In other Mother’s Day news in China, a video of NBA superstar Jeremy Lin rapping for his mother in Chinese went viral over the weekend.
