Chinese police managed to trace a fugitive after discovering his holiday selfies on social media.
The 27-year-old man, surnamed Qin, went into hiding last year when police identified him as a notorious hitman who had seriously injured many of his targets.
According to Shanghai Daily, police discovered photos that Qin had taken of himself whilst celebrating the recent May Day holiday on Wudang Mountain, in Hubei Province.
Qin was then given away by his friend on WeChat, who saw his published selfies on the photo-sharing service, and forwarded them to the police.
Wudang Mountain police said on Monday that they were quickly able to locate Qin by identifying the backdrop of the images. They then arrested him on May 5.
According to officials, Qin told them that he had decided to join a group of friends on the mountain tour. He believed that “the most dangerous place is the safest”.
He posted the selfies as the relaxing trip made him complacent about his fugitive status, he said.
It seems that offenders these days love a good selfie.
