CCTV released security camera footage today showing the events leading up to the fatal shooting of a 45-year-old man by a cop at a Heilongjiang railway station, after questions began mounting over conflicting accounts of the confrontation.
Xu Chunhe was shot by a police officer at the Qing’an Railway Station in Suihua City on May 2 as he was with his mother and three children. Details of the encounter between the cop and Xu were hazy, as only a portion of a bystander’s video had circulated online, and the news drew outrage from the public, who’d speculated that the policeman used excessive force against the man.
Xu’s mother had rejected the 200,000 yuan in compensation offered by railway authorities, and hired lawyers to represent her in the case against the police officer, who she wanted to see “repay with his life”.
The edited footage published online today shows Xu seemingly punching officer Li Lebin before grabbing a two-meter-long baton from the cop and attacking him with it. The man is also seen picking up his young daughter and holding her in front of himself before throwing her to the ground towards Li.
Li said in a CCTV interview that the man had been hitting his head and shooting hand, and that he had no choice but to open fire on Xu ‘because it was a crowded train station where a stray bullet might otherwise hurt a bystander’.
