The newborn baby who managed to survive after being abandoned by his family in the wilderness and buried underground for eight days and nights is healthy enough to leave the hospital this weekend, although it’s unclear where he will go.
A young mother gave birth to the baby, born with a cleft lip, on April 20 in Tiandong county of Guangxi’s Baise city. After being persuaded by relatives, the parents decided to abandoned the child, and paid a man 1,800 yuan to carry out the dirty deed, according to Xinhua.
The man left the child in the wilderness, and two days later, returned to bury him in a nearby cemetery, believing he was dead.
The newborn was found eight days later at the burial site. A woman who had been collecting herbs in the area heard the sound of muffled crying, and when police arrived at the scene, they found the baby partially buried under a layer of dirt.
Wu Weili, a doctor at the People’s Hospital in Tiandong, told reporters it was “a miracle” that the infant had survived for so long without food and water. It’s believed that air and water were able to seep into the cardboard box, as it hadn’t been thoroughly covered by dirt.
The baby was in critical condition upon arriving at the hospital, but is ready to be discharged this week, Xinhua has reported.
Five people, including the boy’s grandmothers, have been detained on charges of attempted murder, but his parents are out on bail. The infant’s mother and grandmother visited the baby at the hospital, and the former was “choked with sobs” upon seeing him.
The mother issued a letter of apology, promising not to hurt the boy if she could take him back home. It’s speculated that he will be sent to a welfare institution until the case is sorted out.
In the meantime, a Guangxi hospital has offered to operate on the child’s cleft lip when he is three months old and weighs at least six kilograms.
