A bus carrying 46 people overturned and plunged 30 meters into a valley near Xianyan city, Shaanxi province yesterday afternoon, killing 35 and injuring the remaining 11 passengers.
According to Xinhua News, the accident took place at around 3:27 p.m. yesterday afternoon. Two fire engines were immediately dispatched to the scene, where fire crews spent over one and a half hours carrying out rescue operations.
Investigators say the bus belonged to the Xiangban trading company in Xi’an, which had organized four buses to take the city’s residents on a two-day trip to the nearby Xianyan city. The accident was said to be the result of driver error as he tried to change lanes.
The injured are being treated at nearby hospitals. Five of the surviving passengers are said to be in a critical condition.
This past April, eight people died and 28 more were injured when a bus rolled over on the Chuxiong-Dali expressway in Yunnan province’s Nanhua county. Earlier in February, a total of 22 people were killed and 38 more injured after a long-distance bus overturned on an expressway in Xinjiang.
