Two people were killed and seven others seriously wounded after a 20-meter long wall suddenly toppled over in Lanzhou, Gansu province on Sunday afternoon.
One of the victims buried by the falling brick wall was killed instantly, while another died in the hospital, NetEase News reports. Seven other people who’d been trapped beneath the wall were pulled out and are now being treated for injuries.
The collapsed structure made up the exterior wall of a residential complex in the city’s Xigu district. It’s been speculated that a strong gust of wind pushed a large steel structure into the brick wall, causing it to topple, but the cause of the tragedy is still under investigation.
CCTV footage shows the moment the wall suddenly collapsed as nine pedestrians, including two children, were walking next to it. The footage also shows the aftermath of the incident, as residents of the city scramble to rescue people buried in the rubble.
