A nine-story residential building in Guiyang city collapsed this morning due to mudslides caused by heavy rainfall. According to the latest report from city government —issued at 8:00 p.m. — 16 people remain missing and cell phone signals of 15 of those missing have been traced to the rubble.
The collapse occurred at around 11:30 a.m. in Guiyang city, the capital of Guizhou province. Government officials said that 98 residents of the apartment building have been found safe.
Officials also said in their statement that mudslides resulting from heavy rains in the area led to the collapse of the apartment building that was home to 35 households. Residents in the surrounding area have also been evacuated for their safety.
Rescuers are still searching the rubble for survivors.
