We typically see cases of overcrowding at swimming pools and beaches in China, but yesterday, the sandy shores of Qingdao, Shandong province were packed with folks who likely had no intentions of taking a swim.
The future brides and grooms dressed in lavish gowns and fancy suits had gathered at the beach to fit in some photo shoots ahead of Internet Valentines Day, which is celebrated both today and tomorrow in China.
Internet Valentines day is celebrated on May 20 and May 21 specifically because the numbers 520 and 521 have similar Chinese pronunciation to “I love you” (我爱你) and “I do” (我愿意). This is also considered a lucky day to get married. (No matter how many other, perhaps better dressed, brides are likely floating in the background of the wedding pictures.)
Last year, a total of 4,698 Shanghai couples tied the knot on the auspicious day, 10 times the usual daily figure.
