A militant video purports to show a Chinese tourist kidnapped by the Taliban in Pakistan last year asking for the government to help secure his release.
According to Phoenix, the video was released by a Taliban militant. In the video the hostage calls on the Chinese government to honour his kidnappers’ ransom demands, despite never stating them.
In May of last year, Pakistani authorities confirmed a Chinese tourist biking around the west of Pakistan had been kidnapped. Pictures of his passport and personal belongings were then released, identifying the man as Hong Xudong.
Following Hong’s abduction, the commander of a Taliban splinter group called Shehryar Mehsud, Abdullah Bahar, claimed responsibility for the abduction.
