A ‘sworn brothers’ ceremony between four primary school classmates ended in disaster after one of the students was put in a coma from drinking three cups of baijiu.
According to Tencent, one of the students arranged the gathering between the two boys and two girls at his grandmother’s house, where they stole a bottle of baijiu (potent Chinese spirit with an alcohol content of up to 60 percent of volume). One of the boys claimed they were simply imitating adults, viewing drinking as a means of consolidating friendship. He said they were also inspired by “sworn brothers” ceremonies in the popular classic drama Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
When the young boy collapsed next to a driver’s motorbike, the driver immediately called police. Noticing the strong smell of alcohol exuding from the students, the boy was rushed to the hospital where he received emergency treatment for alcohol poisoning.
Earlier this year, a young boy suffered brain damage after being fed rice wine by his uncle in Guangxi province.
