At least 38 people were killed when a fire broke out at a nursing home in Pingdingshan, Henan province at around 8:00 p.m. yesterday.
As of early this morning, the death toll had reached 38, while at least six people were reported to have suffered injuries, according to China Daily.
The privately run Kangleyuan home is located in the Sanlihe village of Lushan country and accommodated more than 100 seniors, including several hemiplegic paralyzed seniors who may have been trapped in their rooms when the fire broke out.
A witness quoted in Henan TV said that the blaze was sparked by a circuit problem. Images posted online show plumes of smoke rising from the building, which appears to be situated behind a petrol station.
