Around 630 monks in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province on May 25 marched in line to raise funds for charity on Vesak Day, a holiday observed by Buddhists across the world.
This year marked the Hanghzou monks’ 7th charity march. Donning bamboo hats, robes and sandals, they carried donation bowls as they walked from Hanghzou’s Faxijiang Temple to Lingyin Temple. The event raised 468,000 yuan, all of which will be donated to the Zhejiang Charity Foundation (and not dozens of water heaters).
According to China Youth Network, the 630 monks come from ten different temples and Buddhist institutes.
Vesak Day commemorates the birth, enlightenment and death of Gautama Buddha and is mainly celebrated during the Vaisakha month of the Buddhist and Hindu calendar. In China, it is observed on the eighth day of the fourth month in the Chinese lunar calendar.
