A 31-year-old woman decided to stick a 30-centimeter spatula down her esophagus in an attempt to “save herself” when she experienced trouble breathing.
The woman, surnamed Chen, was rushed to the Kanghua hospital in Dongguan, Guangdong province last month with the tip of the spatula still sticking out of her mouth, media reported today.
Chen told the doctor that while she was cooking, she experienced difficulty breathing, as if there was a massive lump stuck in her throat. She’d remembered someone telling her that if she stuck something down her esophagus, it would clear up.
She first stuck her finger down her throat, but couldn’t reach it. Obviously unaware of previous horror stories, she pulled out a pair of chopsticks, but ended up breaking three of them. The spatula was evidently her last choice.
Her four-year-old daughter, who witnessed the entire thing, watched as her mom turned bright red and appeared to be choking. She quickly called her father and Chen was sent to the hospital.
Doctors said there was absolutely nothing wrong with the woman’s throat. They also said that she was “perfectly sane” despite her extraordinarily irrational decision to “heal” herself by shoving a spatula down her body.
Chen’s esophagus, however, was severely damaged. She has undergone two operations, during which 80 percent of her esophagus was removed. In order for her to consume food normally, doctors had to stretch her stomach to reconnect it with the rest of the esophagus.
Please don’t stick spatulas down your throat.
