Sister May has been hand-carving mahjong tiles from a shop beneath a staircase in Hong Kong’s Hung Hom district since she was 13 years old. Using only five basic tools to carve 42 tile designs, she makes the process look all too easy.
“Nothing in the world is difficult when you find a way to learn,” May explains. “A performance on stage may take two minutes, but it takes 10 years of learning and practicing off stage.”
Kam Fat Mahjong has decidedly mastered the craft since it was opened 53 years ago by Sister May’s parents. Hypebeast TV captures on film as May shows off her skills with mesmerizing speed and precision.
