The 30-year-old man who turned himself into a “human punching bag” to raise money for his young son with leukemia has decided to take the boy home for his last days, as treatment has reportedly failed to save him.
Xia Jun made headlines after managing to raise 800,000 RMB from the public to treat his ill son, Guo Guo. Sadly, and despite his father’s best efforts to help him, the child stopped responding to the chemotherapy treatment.
Xia plans to bring Guo Guo back to his hometown in Sichuan to let him do everything he wants during his remaining days. Doctors predict that the boy has around a month left.
Guo Guo was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in 2013 and was receiving treatment at a hospital in Beijing. In an effort to raise money for the boy’s medical fees, costing around one million RMB, Xia took to the streets and advertised himself as a “human punching bag”, charging 10 yuan per hit. His cause went viral online not long after, and donations and support came pouring in from the public.
Speaking with reporters, Xia said: “I can’t return to society right now, but I won’t forget the help people gave us.”
