China celebrated International Children’s Day yesterday by releasing a music video of a trending boy band singing a decades-old patriotic anthem.
The song, “We are the Heirs of Communism”, was performed by the TFBOYS and Han Geng (韓庚) from Korea’s Super Junior M. The (be warned) 12-minute long video was posted to The Communist Youth League of China’s official Weibo account and was shared 200,000 times by this morning.
Popular stars such as Yao Ming, Han Geng and other familiar faces from CCTV children programs made an appearance in the music video, which was shot in Beijing, Chongqing and South Korea.
Wu Dezu, the director of new media at the youth league’s Central Committee, told reporters that the celebrities chosen were inspiring idols for teens.
“We need to support teen idols. Using teen idols in the right way can help the youth to [develop good] values,” Wu was quoted saying in an SCMP article.
President Xi Jinping also preached about patriotic values to children during his speech at the Chinese Young Pioneers (CYP) organization in Beijing yesterday. Xi was quoted as saying that children should always follow the Communist Party of China’s instructions to be “a good kid that meets the need of the motherland and people and a successor to carry on the cause”.
The original version of “We are the Heirs of Communism” was included in the soundtrack of Little 8th Route Heroes, a 1961 film about a group of children who helped the 8th Route Army.
