Earlier this evening, a large fire broke out at Shanghai’s New World Emporium shopping mall on People’s Square. Chinese media outlets report that the fire has been extinguished and there were no casualties.
Sina News reports that the fire started at 7:04 p.m. and that the Shanghai fire department responded quickly and put out the fire in 14 minutes. No one inside the building or on the street below were injured by the blaze.
Apple Daily reports that the fire was caused by the large neon signs on the side the New World building.
Photos from Shanghai netizens quickly flooded onto Weibo, showing smoke billowing up from the shopping mall and fire fighters responding to the blaze. Many can’t help but wonder what the heck is going on in China lately.
