Teachers in Hong Kong have voiced concern over new government-proposed history curriculum, which they argue will be used to “brainwash” students.
Beijing and Hong Kong authorities have long used the education system as a means to promote Chinese nationalism among young Hongkongers. The administration is now being criticized by more and more teaching professionals who have resisted incorporating the new curriculum, which includes only a “sanitized” version of modern history in China, ejinsights reports.
According to a survey conducted by the Education Bureau, 50 percent of secondary schools opposed the change of curriculum, whilst only 37 percent agreed to the revision.
Critics of the new history curriculum argue that it will only serve to “brainwash students” about the “glorious history” of the Communist Party since it assumed power in 1949, as it will focus only on the contemporary history of China and replace the existing lessons that focused on ancient Chinese history.
Similarly, it will teach students how the Communist Party has propelled China to become a global superpower, highlighting national achievements in fields such as sports and scientific research.
Of course, students will never directly learn about the darker side of China under Communist Party rule, with topics such as the Cultural Revolution, the suppression of dissidents and the June 4, 1989 Tiananmen Massacre still swept under the carpet.
It should be noted that this is the first time that teachers have voiced concern over rigid and dubious government-proposed curriculum in schools. Critique of the skewed government agenda suggests that Chinese teachers appear to be moving in a new direction.
The reports come months after universities on the mainland were told to ban books promoting “Western values”.
