A tanker loaded with 32 tons of naptha, a flammable hydrocarbon liquid mixture, overturned into a Hanzhong reservoir in Shanxi province on Monday night. The driver from the truck was found dead and another is reportedly still missing.
The 20-meter-long tanker had separated from the rest of the truck and was found floating at the surface of the water, leaking an estimated 10 tons of naptha. The driver of the truck was already dead when firefighters arrived with cranes to lift the damaged truck out of the water.
The Hanzhong City Environmental Department is still awaiting results from samples taken from the reservoir to test the water quality. Meanwhile, large amounts of absorbent materials have been used to soak up the spill.
The truck reportedly came from Ningxia and was headed towards Sichuan province. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
