With no decent places to play in their city, a group of soccer super fans decided to take matters into their own hands, by pooling their resources to build their own personal football field on top of a carpark in downtown Zhengzhou, Henan province.
It took one month for Xu Cong and his football-loving buddies to complete the 900 square meter field and another adjacent smaller field. They decided to go all out–the field’s artificial surface has LED lighting and the whole thing is surrounded by a protective cage and net to prevent them from losing an innumerable amount of footballs forever.
According to NetEase, Xu has been a huge football fan since he was a kid, but for the last 10 years he hasn’t been able to practice his passion, since the only place he could find to play a match was far away and only available once a week. Finally fed up with this awful arrangement, Xu and his like-minded friends set out to take their game to a whole new level (ugh) and create a place nearby for themselves where they could play whenever the hell they want.
Well, almost whenever. Xu says in order not to be a giant nuisance to the nearby office buildings, they have established rules that only allow games to be played after 3:00 p.m. (Really, who works after then anyway?)
The field has become locally popular and attracts a near constant stream of players. So, maybe the city of Zhengzhou should take the hint and give the people what they want? What better way to get promoted than by promoting football in your locality? After all, Chinese players are going to need all the practice space they can get if they are going to reach the goal set by the national government of getting good at football in time for the 2030 Olympics.
Actually, Xu and his friends are only the second group of football fanatics to build their own “soccer field in the air“. But, we can all agree that this one is way cooler, what with the tall buildings.
