Pictures have emerged from dog and cat slaughterhouses in Yulin city, Guangxi province where the locals consume dog and cat meat to observe the summer solstice each year on June 21.
According to the South China Morning Post, the pictures were taken by Humane Society Internationalis (HSI) China specialist Peter Li who recently visited the region.
Although the dog meat trade is in decline, some slaughterhouses remain in operation throughout China.
These kitchen knives are used to butcher dozens of dogs and cats each day.
Here dog meat is displayed in the market for passers-by.
At last year’s Yulin Dog Festival, one local procurer of dog meat found an innovative way to extort money from market-goers, by threatening to violently kill the dogs on offer unless they purchased them at inflated prices.
