A man jumped to his death from the ledge of a hotel in Changde, Hunan province yesterday. Footage of the scene was recorded by bystanders, who watched in horror as he attempted to puncture an air mattress put out by rescuers before taking his own life.
Staff at the hotel said they called the police as soon as they noticed that the man was planning on jumping. Rescuers arrived and set up an inflated air mattress in response, but it was of no use.
It’s reported that the man began throwing glass, ceramic tiles and other sharp objects out of the window in an attempt to deflate the mattress. He then jumped from the building and died on the spot.
The man was seen standing on the ledge and holding onto the bars of the window before he jumped off.
Police are now investigating the case.
