All 68 tenants managed to safely evacuate a seven-story Guizhou apartment building before it collapsed this morning, thanks to an alert couple who went door-to-door to warn their neighbors before it happened.
According to the husband, Ji Yuankui, he and his wife Luo Kaisu were getting ready to go to bed at around 1:00 a.m. today when a loud noise startled them. Seconds later, they discovered that a huge crack had appeared on the wall and that it was beginning to crumble.
The couple, who lived on the sixth floor, worried that a collapse might occur. They both rushed out of their apartment to wake up the rest of the tenants in the building door-by-door.
Nearly half an hour after all 68 residents were safely evacuated, the building toppled
The 68 people have been relocated, Tencent News reports. Police cordoned off the site and the cause is being investigated.
Two people were left dead when an apartment suddenly collapsed in Shanghai’s Hongkou district last year. Not long before that, a residential building toppled in Zhejiang province, killing one. A nearby resident was cited by local media as saying that tenants had reported cracks in the building that were never fixed.
