A group of men were arrested after stripping down to their bare asses and protesting outside the gates of the Hunan Provincial Higher People’s court on Monday morning.
Many passerby took the opportunity to take pictures of the naked man, who were yelling and shouting with five others while holding protest signs.
The spectacle lasted all of 20 minutes before court police came out and arrested the men (after persuading them to put their clothes back on, of course).
After pictures from the incident spread on the internet, the Hunan Higher People’s court posted on their official Weibo account, revealing that the nude protestors belonged to a larger group of 10 people who were hired by Li Tianming, a man who was involved in a court case over a utilities development dispute.
Initially, Li had won the case in the Yongzhou Intermediate People’s Court, but the utilities development company appealed to the Hunan Provincial Higher People’s court. The case was then sent for a retrial and eventually resulted in the decision being overturned.
Li, who was disappointed with the final decision, appealed to a higher court, but failed. He then appealed to the Supreme’s People’s Court, but failed again. Even his application to the Hunan Provincial People’s Procuratorate for prosecutorial supervision was denied.
Fed up with the whole situation, Li decided to hire a group of men to make a scene and attract attention.
The naked protesters will be detained for 15 to 20 days while the incident is currently being investigated by Hunan’s public security bureau.
