Here are the six winners of the 2015 Women’s Armpit Hair Competition, judged according to the number of likes and shares that their photos accumulated on Weibo.
The first-prize award goes to the woman behind Weibo handle Zhu Xixi loves eating fish, with 202 likes and shares.
“When I was still heterosexual, my boyfriend at the time just took it for granted that I would shaved my armpits to wear sleeveless T-shirts. Then I shaved all of his underarm hair and let him experience what girls go through,” she said.
After she learned that she was the champion of the competition, she said, “I’m very excited, because I only wanted to get the second place. I want to say thank you to the competition organizer for holding such brilliant activity!”
Weibo user Li Mai Zi took her place among the second place winners with 138 likes and shares. She submitted her picture to call on more girls to fight armpit hair shaving and domestic violence.
Weibo user Chacha also took second-prize after she submitted a black-and-white photo of herself wearing a bra and proudly showing of her armpit hair. The photo racked up 135 likes and shares.
“I love my armpit hair, which is a part of my soft body hair. I hope all girls will show it off without fear,” she said.
There third-prize winners were selected, the first was netizen Junjun Ai Ziji, who earned 134 likes and shares. She wrote, “even I have less armpit hair, I can still be strong and beautiful.”
Weibo user Miao Zhao was another third-prize winner. “Who says armpit hair isn’t beautiful. If you don’t want to shave it, just leave it unshaven,” she said.
Weibo user Weitingting waiting said that she specially paid a visit to the Zhongshan University to take the set of pictures. “I took part in the competition in the hope to challenge myself to face my real body and become braver,” she said.
The competition was organized by feminist activist Xiao Yue in order to bring attention to the idea that women do not need to be hairless to feel beautiful.
The competition kicked off on May 26 and ended June 10. The first place winner received a hundred free condoms, the second place winners each got a vibrator. The third place winners were rewarded with ten female urination devices.
