Myanmar opposition leader and former dissident Aung San Suu Kyi recently met with Xi Jinping and took a trip to the Great Wall as she concluded her visit to China.
Xi Jinping met with Aung San Suu Kyi in the Great Hall of the People. Xi said China and Myanmar have common interests and a common destiny. They share zeal and woe, and should work to further their friendship and cooperation.
According to Phoenix, Aung San Suu Kyi said that China and Myanmar are neighboring countries and that it’s vital for them to maintain cordial relations.
But China-Myanmar relations have cooled as the country has introduced democratic reforms and opened up economically to the West, while in recent months an ethnic insurgency in the Kokang region of Myanmar has spilled over the border into China.
The visit comes as Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) party is expected to perform strongly in elections later this year. China is looking to develop a rapport with the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize winner.
