A police officer from Shandong police has been held for interrogation after he had knocked down five middle school students, killing two while on the way to pick up his daughter this past Friday.
NetEase reports that the police officer, identified as Jiang Beiping, is an instructor at the Chengguan Police Station. Chengguan are the civil enforcement officers beloved by the Chinese people.
According to images provided by witnesses, Jiang was driving an SUV without a driving license and crossed over a green belt near a road. Numbers of witnessing insiders believed that Jiang was drunk driving.
A representative of Tancheng Police Station, surnamed Du, confirmed that Jiang was a police officer but said that he didn’t believe he had been drunk driving.
Jiang said he wasn’t drunk at the time, but that he had been in a bad mood after seeing his mother who was about to undergo an operation. Shortly before the accident he had taken pills for his cold and then left to go collect his daughter.
When reporters asked if Jiang had taken a blood alcohol test, Du responded that because Jiang is a police officer, the local police cannot answer the question, but said that the county propaganda department will answer media questions in due course.
Reporters said that they called the county propaganda department several times but could find no-one willing to talk to them about the incident.
The five students hit by the police officer were rushed to hospital following the accident, but two passed away during emergency treatment.
Families of the victims were seen waiting outside the county government building this morning in the hope to petition authorities to fully investigate the police officer involved.
