Several local officials and educators in Bijie City, Guizhou Province were suspended, removed from their posts or punished after four siblings in Guizhou committed suicide by drinking pesticide last Tuesday.
The tragedy shocked the nation and drew attention to the plights of young “left-behind” children in rural China.
According to the local government website of the Qixingguan District in Bijie, three local authorities, including the deputy head of the district government and the head of the district’s education bureau, were suspended; while the party secretary and the chief of Bijie city were both removed from their posts.
Seven others who were responsible for the education of the four siblings, including a school principal and teachers, will face punishment as well.
In response to the tragedy, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang ordered authorities last Friday to “increase supervision” so that social security mechanisms do not “become a mere formality”.
