With trafficked children high on the public’s consciousness following a series of campaigns aimed at reuniting kidnapped kids with their family members, more people are willing to intervene when they see something suspicious. Recently in Sichuan province, however, it seems that passersby were a bit too quick to act when they saw a child crying on the street with his aunt.
The woman took the little boy to the road last Sunday to play about. He began crying and fussing as he was with her, generating suspicion from crowds of pedestrians who gathered around. Assuming that the woman was a child trafficker, they surrounded her and began roughing her up.
The two were sent to a local police station, where officers confirmed that she was, in fact, his aunt.
Thousands of children are kidnapped every year in China and sold for adoption or forced labor. In January, police rescued 37 babies and a three-year-old toddler in a bust that led to the arrest of 103 suspected child traffickers.
