About the Program
The Centre for China Studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong provides its students with a dynamic, immersive undergraduate education aimed at preparing its students for international careers. Its English-language curriculum aims to engage students to think critically about China’s history, culture, society, economy, and governmental policy – and ultimately China’s place in a globalized world.
Because the program is taught in English, no prior knowledge of Chinese is required. The highlights of the curriculum include intensive language training at CUHK’s Yale-China Chinese Language Center, a required semester abroad (currently at Peking University), and annual field study courses in China. The program’s highly international peer group (nearly 90%) means that students will be met with driven classmates and diverse perspectives from around the globe.
Why China Studies at CUHK? Why Hong Kong?
CUHK combines the best traditions of a modern, Western-style, English-language education with a cultural and geographical proximity to China unparalleled by universities elsewhere.
Being based in Hong Kong – Asia’s vibrant, multicultural World City – means students are perfectly poised to take advantage of the best that China and the region have to offer. Hong Kong is unparalleled in its job and internship opportunities, and international students will receive an “IANG” visa after graduation that allows them to remain in the territory for a year while looking for work. The Hong Kong government also assures that campus dining, housing, and transportation are all offered at an affordable rate for students (e.g. student can take all public transportation in the city for half-price).
What students do after graduation
Graduates from The Centre for China Studies consistently secure competitive posts within the global financial sector, non-profit organizations, government agencies, and international media outlets. Those choosing to pursue further study regularly matriculate to top institutions in Asia and worldwide.
