A woman who was watching as her husband changed a flat tire on a Hangzhou highway was struck by a passing car and killed on June 15.
The couple were driving on the S31 Highway when one of their car tires went flat, news.china.com reports. Zhou said he had asked Sheng to stay in the car while he went to get the spare tire and equipment from his trunk. He also placed a traffic warning sign about 50m away form the car.
Sheng got out of the car to take a picture of her husband, and shared the image to Weibo along with the caption “How unfortunate, a flat tire on the highway! Danger!”. Worried, Zhou told Sheng to get back inside the car, but Sheng, who’d noticed that the traffic warning sign had fallen, went to pick it up. Zhou heard a crashing sound and turned around to see that his wife had been hit by a white BMW from behind, sending her flying in the air.
A traffic police officer on the highway said that the tragedy could have been avoided and that Zhou should not have tried fixing his car on a highway by himself in the first place.
Zhou wept at the police station while reading the last messages his wife had posted before her death, according to reports.
